Mission
Creating and supporting partnerships that energize our local communities to prevent adolescent pregnancy by promoting healthy lifestyles. GCAPP's Vision GCAPP's History It was in the mid-1990’s, after a short period of inactivity, that GCAPP became incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization. A merger in 2001 brought the Greensboro and High Point coalitions, who had previously functioned separately, together in their efforts to reduce teen pregnancy for all of Guilford County. GCAPP’s members are purposefully recruited to include broad representation of individuals from youth service agencies of Guilford County, as well as representation from all sectors of the community including individuals from diverse races; medical, school, and business backgrounds; and for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Members must be committed to contributing to the development and success of GCAPP projects through their ongoing support, attendance and active participation in meetings and other GCAPP functions. Talents of our members include expertise in the areas of: teen pregnancy, teen pregnancy prevention, direct services to teens, health care, family planning, evaluation, social work, education, finance, collaboration and program implementation. GCAPP is supported by the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation as well as by membership fees and donations. GCAPP Board of Directors
Values Statements Statement 2: We believe schools, religious institutions and youth serving organizations play an important role in complimenting and supporting parents as they teach their children about sexuality. Statement 3: We believe it is important to provide adolescents with information essential to the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) acknowledging abstinence from sexual activity as the only 100% effective method. Statement 4: We believe adolescent pregnancy and parenting pose long-term challenges for adolescents, their children, families and communities. Statement 5: We believe youth can make responsible decisions about sexuality, pregnancy and parenting when they have complete, accurate, culturally relevant, age, gender, and developmentally appropriate information, skills, resources and support. Statement 6: We believe that effective adolescent pregnancy prevention, pregnancy programs and parenting programs utilize research-based strategies, demonstrate an understanding and respect for the rights and capabilities of adolescents, and include a range of stake holders in the decision-making, implementation and evaluation processes. We further believe that identification and evaluation of innovative strategies and promising approaches will benefit the field. Statement 7: We believe that both male and female partners are equally responsible for preventing early pregnancy, as well as supporting, nurturing and parenting their children. Statement 8: We believe that all children deserve to grow up in safe, nurturing environments that promote their healthy development. We further recognize the responsibility to address the multiple needs of children of young parents. Statement 9: We believe that individuals and organizations in the field must have access to, and utilize, the most current information on research, best practices and fiscal resources, as well as professional growth opportunities. Statement 10:
We believe that the collaboration of families,
communities, practitioners, schools, religious institutions and local,
state, regional and national coalitions and networks is essential in
addressing the issues of adolescent pregnancy, prevention and parenting. |
