Keynote – 9:30 am

Terri Mitchell, Ph.D., Appalachian State University

There will be two time blocks for concurrent sessions, one in the morning and a second in the afternoon. Attendees can choose to attend any of the following sessions during those times. For more information about the day's schedule, see our conference brochure

Concurrent Session I — Who’s Really Getting Pregnant? Pregnancy and Sexual Trends Among Adolescents
Health Educators from the Guilford County Department of Public Health will take a close look at teen pregnancy data from the past 10 years and present an overview of the demographics of pregnant teens in Guilford County and North Carolina followed by an engaging discussion over the need for programs targeting specific populations. Factors such as age, race, ethnicity and geographic location will be discussed to reach those most affected by teen pregnancy.

Presenters: Jean Workman; Wanda Mackey; and Laura Mrosla from Smart Girls Life Skills Training
Concurrent Session II — Part of Two Worlds: Addressing Sexuality Education Issues within the Hispanic Community
While Latinas are being encouraged to become educated and independent, at the same time they are being told–albeit subtly and unconsciously–that having children at a young age is an essential component to being an “ideal” Latino female. This presentation will focus on the underlying reasons for such behavior and help educators be in a better position to approach groups in a more understanding and embracing manner in order to benefit not only the Latino community but the greater community as a whole.

Presenters: Teri Wellendorf, Health Educator with Family Life Council and Jóvenes Sabias Educator and Parent Educator for the Hispanic Community

Concurrent Session III — Teen Media: The Mass Media and Adolescents’ Sexual Health
In the context of parents often too uncomfortable to talk about sex with their children, schools restricted in what can be taught, and religions that say little, the mass media have become powerful sex educators for adolescents. In this presentation, what is currently known about the effects of the media on adolescents' sexual beliefs and behaviors is reviewed. Media literacy education is presented as a promising way to engage young people in using media more intelligently.

Presenter: Dr. Jane D. Brown, Ph.D. (James L. Knight Professor), The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Concurrent Session IV — What Works? A Look at the Research and Evidence-based Programs (Morning session only)
This session will review the TAC (Tool to Assess the Characteristics of Effective Sex and STD/HIV Education Programs) and provide the opportunity for hands-on engagement with activities from “Programs that Work”.
